cactically asked: How do you spend your free time and where would you like to be in 10 years
(thanks for asking something!)
My free time really goes to practicing music, and occasional tumbling at night once I’m done with that (usually practice from 9 to 11 or 9 to 12). I’ve also been watching the second half of Portlandia recently, which is fantastic and a lot better than what I’d seen when I watched the first half at the beginning of the year. I like figuring out what I want to do in the future, working out tentative travel plans that may or may not ever happen, and stuff like that. When I’m at home I go driving a lot, usually with my camera, quality music and coffee, and do my landscape photography stuff.
Where would I like to be in ten years?
Well, I’d like to have established myself in a major music scene (likely New York because of all the Oberlin connections) and hopefully making something resembling a living that way, at the head of an improvisational music collective playing everything from non-idiomatic stuff through free jazz, fusion, post-, math- and psychedelic rock, and extremely complicated minimalist/impressionist-inspired stuff. Grad school in Composition or Contemporary Improvisation/Performance (at NEC or Berklee, most likely) is also a possibility. I want to have traveled the world, know tons about many different styles of world music (especially Classical Indian music), be an experienced experimental/jazz guitarist, and hopefully be playing festivals and following the jam band trajectory somewhere in there as well. (This all works together in a much more straightforward way then I’m making it sound).
